Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) supplied added ammunition Monday, when she said it was clear that at least some of the leaked information was coming from White House ranks. That members of the Obama administration were intentionally leaking classified material to enhance the presidents reputation in an election year. The house armed services committee on the leaks, chairman McKeon told reporters afterward that he did not bleive the Pentagon was responsible for recent national security leaks. Feinsteins remarks as US officials said the number of people with access to some of the nations’s most carefully guarded secrets topped 4.86 million in 2011. That’s up from 4.7 million people granted security clearances the year before. New hires approved by congress as part of expanded clandestine operations in the Obama administration. Clearance levels range from confidential to secret to top secret clearances in 2011 numbered 1.4 million down slightly from 1.43 million the year before.
Romney called for a special independent counsel to look into the leaks and said he wanted to see the source of the privileged information “exposed, dismissed, and punished.”
