HARRY REID ON THE ATTACK AGAIN—FILIBUSTER RULES

2/7/13

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has threatened Senate Republicans, declaring a 24-36 hour deadline on reaching a filibuster reform deal – or he will push the “nuclear option” button and change the longstanding Senate rules on filibusters.
Reid’s plan is designed to render conservative Senators’ efforts virtually powerless to stop Barack Obama’s Leftist agenda and radical nominees to key positions.

“I hope within the next 24 to 36 hours we can get something we agree on. If not, we’re going to move forward on what I think needs to be done. The caucus will support me on that.”
In other words, if a deal isn’t reached on Reid’s terms, he intends to employ the parliamentary trickery called the “nuclear option” to force the rule change – unilaterally declaring that Democrats only need a simple majority to change the Senate rules.
Democrats will then change the rules from needing 60 votes to stop a filibuster to a simple majority of 51, and the “fix” will be in place.
The Democrats hold 55 seats. The “nuclear option” will render the minority party virtually powerless to filibuster or offer amendments.
“Powerful liberal groups and left-leaning lawmakers see filibuster reform as necessary to advancing President Obama’s second-term agenda, which includes immigration reform and gun-control legislation.
And Reid has dozens of powerful unions and special interest groups with powerful lobbyists and deep pockets backing his attack on filibuster rules. As many as 47 Democrat Senators are also backing his efforts.
